Spruill Hayes is a local realism painter. She grew up in Wilmington, NC which inspired her love for all things coastal. As a young girl, she was always drawn to art and loved to draw and create.
After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, Spruill moved to New York to pursue a career in advertising to apply her love of creativity to the business world. In 2008, Spruill decided to return to her Southern roots and found a home in Charleston, a place she has always loved growing up. It is here that her passion for the arts was reinvigorated. While continuing to work in marketing, she spent much time on the side honing her skills in drawing and cultivating her knowledge of painting. She took multiple classes as well as lessons with a local realism oil painter who helped train her in her favorite medium and style of painting. In 2015, she decided to pursue her art full time with a focus on oil painting. While this was a big decision, the opportunity motivated her to fulfill her dream of being a professional artist. Spruill is drawn to oils because of their rich, buttery texture and the ability to achieve a high level of detail. As a realism painter, which stems from her original love of pencil, she enjoys the ability to attain precise details.
Most of Spruill's work focuses on still lifes which allow her to capture objects in a moment in time and bring them to life in way that the viewer can look at these everyday things differently. She is inspired by rich colors and all aspects of Lowcountry living. She often alternates between painting vibrant florals and Southern/local coastal themes.
Spruill lives in downtown Charleston with her husband, Scott, three dogs and a baby boy on the way. When she is not painting, you can find her at the beach, on the boat, or spending time with friends and family around the Lowcountry.
